With zip lines running 60 feet above the ground and self-guided courses that can take more than 30 minutes to complete, a new kind of fun has come to the Berkshires with the opening of the Catamount Adventure Park in Massachusetts.

Catamount Ski Area's aerial adventure park is an addition to Berkshire County's already long list of summer tourist attractions for families. The four-acre forest park, billed the largest of its kind in North America, features eight different courses containing aerial obstacles such as zip-lines and swinging bridges. The courses are part of Catamount's goal to make its facility a year-round attraction.

All courses are open to ages 14 and up, while ages 8 through 13 are allowed to use various beginner courses. Read a detailed article describing the courses attached above!

The park was the idea of Bahman Azram, a resident of Connecticut, who had visited a similar facility upon returning to Switzerland for a high school reunion.
"I thought, 'This is fantastic. I need to build one of these in the U.S.,'" said Azram.
The goal, organizers say, is to offer an exciting activity that connects with the growing eco-tourism industry and to encourage outdoor activity for teens and the entire family, adding, "The kids don't realize that while they're having fun, they're getting exercise!"

Tucked away in the canopy of trees, there are 115 wooden platforms connected by various zip lines, catwalks and rope ladders. And unlike typical amusement parks where visitors are carted around on rides, these courses are self-guided so it's up to the participant to figure out the best tactic to arrive at the next tree.

In terms of safety, state-of-the-art harnesses are attached to safety chords by two carabiners, one of which must be attached to the lines at all times. Also, numerous staff are on the ground with training in emergency rescues.
